NSS - National Service Scheme

The National Service Scheme (NSS) is a government initiative under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports (MoYAS), launched in 1969 with the aim of instilling the spirit of community service among youth. Built around the motto “Not Me, But You,” NSS encourages students to go beyond academics and engage with the world around them, making a difference through small, consistent efforts that lead to meaningful change.

Under the able guidance of Prof. Anju Srivastava, at Hindu College, one of the oldest and most eminent institutions of the University of Delhi, NSS has found a space that naturally aligns with its values. With a proud legacy of 126 years, the college stands as a beacon of academic excellence, progressive thought, and social consciousness. Established in 1899, it has consistently upheld the ideals of inclusivity, critical thinking, and service to the nation. This enduring commitment to social responsibility and student-led change makes the presence of NSS on campus a natural and powerful extension of its broader mission to nurture well-rounded individuals.

Under the guidance of Dr. Pallav Kumar Nandwana, Programme Officer and Associate Professor, Department of Hindi, NSS Hindu College has grown into a vibrant community of thoughtful, motivated students who work together to create tangible social impact. Through various projects and initiatives, volunteers channel their ideas into action while also building a deeper understanding of the world beyond college.

The society functions through four core wings that independently and collaboratively drive its major projects:

The Education Wing works closely with children from underprivileged and economically weaker backgrounds. Through projects like Project Akshar and Project Gandhi Ashram, volunteers regularly visit slum areas and learning spaces to teach young children. The sessions are aimed not just at academic tutoring, but also at fostering curiosity, confidence, and self-worth among the students. The wing also includes the Scribe Wing, which supports students with disabilities in their academic journeys by providing them with the necessary assistance.College students in need of a scribe are encouraged to get in touch with us for assistance.

The Health Wing focuses on spreading awareness about physical and mental well-being in simple, accessible ways. From wellness drives to cleanliness campaigns, the wing initiates efforts that promote a healthier lifestyle among students and communities alike. It believes in creating consistent and informed conversations about well-being, hygiene, and public health.

The Media Wing plays a crucial role in amplifying the work of the society. From managing all social media handles to creating posters, infographics, and reports, they bring the activities of NSS to life through visuals and words. During the pandemic, when on-ground activities came to a halt, it was the Media Wing that kept NSS Hindu College going strong online with regular updates and creative digital campaigns.

The Social Entrepreneurship Wing aims at empowering marginalized communities through sustainable livelihood initiatives. Its flagship project, Project Bunidhari, works closely with underprivileged women from areas like Majnu ka Tila, encouraging them to create handmade products. These are sold through different platforms, and all earnings are given directly to the women, helping them become financially independent and self-reliant.

NSS Hindu College also organizes three of the most anticipated events on campus:

Suruchi, the college’s annual Diwali fest, is one of the biggest cultural events in the entire DU circuit, drawing a footfall of nearly 10,000 people. It is entirely organized by NSS, and planning begins a month in advance. The event stands out not just for its vibrancy, but also for the immense effort and collaboration it requires, showcasing the spirit of teamwork that defines the unit.

Samvaad, the annual speaker conclave, brings together voices from different fields: social work, policy, journalism, activism; to engage in meaningful conversations with students. It is a space where dialogue meets action, and where volunteers are inspired to think critically and contribute thoughtfully.

NSS Day, celebrated every year on 24th September with great enthusiasm, is one of the flagship events of our unit. The day includes talks by esteemed speakers who share their journeys and insights on social impact, leadership, and youth engagement. Performances by our college's music and dance societies add colour and energy to the celebration, making it both meaningful and memorable. Alongside these, activities like a blood donation camp and wellness drives are also organised, reinforcing our commitment to community welfare and active participation.

One of the most engaging parts of the NSS calendar is the Annual Camp, a week-long programme hosted on campus. The camp includes a wide range of activities like visits to the Gandhi Ashram, Gandhi Museums, and heritage walks, as well as wellness drives and reflective group sessions. It offers volunteers an immersive experience, helping them build stronger bonds with the community and among themselves.

The unit is also actively involved in promoting the key flagship initiatives of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, such as:

MY Bharat (Mera Yuva Bharat) – A national platform that empowers youth to channel their energy into community-building and skill enhancement.

National Integration Camps (NIC) – Celebrating unity in  diversity and encouraging cultural exchange among youth from across India.

Republic Day Parade Camp – A prestigious opportunity where selected volunteers represent their state and college at the national level.

At its core, NSS is not just an organisation—it's an emotion, a quiet revolution of kindness and selfless action.

Every cleanliness drive, every child taught, every woman empowered, every life touched, these are not just events, but echoes of compassion that linger.

As delivered in our Samvaad Conclave, “Swayam saje, vasundhara sawar de” : when we nurture ourselves through acts of service, we also adorn the world we live in. It is through these small, heartfelt actions that NSS volunteers silently paint a brighter, more inclusive future.

Through its continuous efforts, NSS Hindu College aims to stay true to its core values : service, awareness, and empathy, while creating spaces for growth, change, and collaboration.

Annual Publication

NSS Hindu College also brings out an annual publication, named ARPAN that documents the year-round efforts of our volunteers: from on-ground campaigns to thought-provoking reflections and creative submissions. The magazine is a testament to the spirit of service and storytelling that defines our unit.
